Beginner’s Guide To NLP Techniques
Have you heard of Neuro Linguistic Programming but are unsure what it actually is? This article looks at some of the most common NLP techniques that can help you develop good relationships and improve your life. One of the best techniques is all about developing good goals. You do this by being positive and thinking about what you want and how to get it, rather than thinking negatively. So, stop focusing on what you don’t want and your problems and focus on positive outcomes instead.
NLP is also really useful for teaching you about ‘good’ eye contact and you can learn how make people feel more comfortable in your presence by adapting to their preferred methods of eye contact. For instance, there are some people who don’t like to be looked at for any length of time and others who find it odd when you don’t look at them. The technique involves learning how to tell what they like and fitting in to their needs and making them comfortable.
Building rapport is another important aspect of NLP. This is focused on encouraging the people you work with to trust you and developing good relationships with them. A large part of this is done through making them feel at ease by focusing on similarities in your body language and taking note of subtle body movements. Your tone of voice is also important, as speaking on the same wavelength as someone else can make them feel more comforted and reassured when they’re with you.
You can also learn a lot from body language, as suggested above, and one common NLP technique is to use body language to work out when people are intentionally or unintentionally concealing something for you. NLP practitioners are good at observing the way people act and they pick up on their habits really quickly. Things like muscle movements, eye contact, tone of voice and skin tone can all be really revealing with the people you work with, so make sure you pay attention.
Finally, working out your ‘anchors’ is another common NLP technique. Anchors are essentially things that trigger certain responses and they are commonly used in NLP in order to alleviate negative reactions and bad moods. So, for instance, when you watch a food advert, it makes you want food. This technique is applied to different situations to identify what work as anchors for your negativity, as it is much easier to deal with them and neutralize them if you’re aware of them.
